Over the past few years, Conserve Nova Scotia and Nova Scotia Power's LED holiday light exchange has helped thousands of Nova Scotians show their commitment to energy efficiency.
During the 2008 holiday season, 41 communities took part in this program. Participants exchange two sets of old inefficient holiday lights for one new set of energy efficient LED holiday lights.
Since the program began in 2005, more than 36,000 sets of old lights have been exchanged for efficient LED holiday lighting. This translates to more than 900,000 kilowatt hours of electricity, or enough electricity to power 100 homes for a year. Greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced by approximately 800 tonnes, or the equivalent of removing 175 cars from the road.
Thanks to those who attended the community tree lighting ceremonies, and especially to those who participated in the LED holiday light exchange.
